Storefront LED ribbon installation
Project brief
A multi-store retail chain needed a slim, continuous LED ribbon along the full-width glazing to replace static vinyl and support campaign graphics without reprinting. The brief emphasized even luminance, minimal visible hardware from the sidewalk, and remote dimming after closing hours.
Implementation
We specified a high-CRI ribbon with extruded diffuser, segmented power injection every four meters, and a centralized controller for scene presets. Thermal paths were validated against winter condensation cycles and summer sun load on the glass mullions.
Scope highlights
Day/night brightness curves, anti-glare baffle option for pedestrian sightlines, and maintenance access from the interior only—no ladder work on the façade for lamp swaps.
Electrical and control architecture
Each store received a labeled enclosure with surge protection sized to local supplier recommendations, a master relay for after-hours cutoff, and a compact controller pushing DMX-free scene storage for operators who are not AV specialists. Scenes include “open wash,” “promo pulse,” and “security low” with hard caps on maximum brightness so regional guidelines for glare toward roadways are never exceeded accidentally.
Rollout consistency
Because the chain planned twelve openings within one fiscal year, we froze a golden sample profile and diffuser lot code. Field variance—slightly different mullion paint reflectance—was corrected with optional snap-on baffles rather than ad hoc dimming tweaks per site. Training PDFs and a two-minute phone video covered lamp inspection through glass and when to escalate to warranty service.
Measurement and acceptance
Photometric spot checks were taken at 1.5m pedestrian distance at dusk and compared to model predictions. Uniformity across the ribbon beat the contract minimum after diffuser shimming on two pilot locations; those learnings were written into the standard install note for subsequent stores. Thermal images of drivers were archived for facilities teams reviewing summer performance.
Lessons learned
Early prototypes showed moiré when photographed through certain phone lenses; rotating the LED pitch 3° relative to the glass grid eliminated the issue without visible banding in person. Future iterations may add optional tunable white for seasonal campaigns, using the same power backbone with swapped controller firmware.
Delivery window: 6 business days including on-site commissioning.
